Surge Protocol

As of right now we still have funding to allow for surge calls but this will be revisited as staffing/hours allow.

Surge shifts are paid baseline AFA rates with no patient/productivity bonus.

You are eligible for Special Visit Premiums (SVPs) for these shifts.

Guidelines for calling a surge shift

  1. Department is approaching >20 patients waiting to be seen plus at least 15 patients in beds to be seen plus wait times approaching >2.5 hours.
  2. Charge RN, or colleague, may ask you to put out a surge request. Please also discuss this with all other docs currently working.
  3. If a surge call is needed, please send a message to the effect of "Surge request GRH/SMGH" into the KWEMA urgent messages WhatsApp group, as well as the rationale for the surge request.
  4. A member of the ED leadership will then have to approve/deny the request.
