Joining KWEMA

Eligibility

Eligibility to join KWEMA is based on satisfying the following criteria:

  1. The candidate has worked a minimum of 80 shifts between both hospitals.
  2. The candidate demonstrates strength in all of the following domains: clinical skills and foundational knowledge, teamwork, and professionalism; there has been no concerning feedback from peers, coworkers, charge nurses, or consulting specialists.
  3. The candidate has submitted billing codes on at least 17** patients per shift over the last 2–4 months, including a minimum of 20 shifts.

** This number is based on the submission records received from billing agents. Out-of-country and private insurance (e.g. UHIP) patients are excluded from the calculation as these are billed by the hospital. These non-OHIP patients are estimated to account for fewer than 1 patient per shift. This target was selected based on the break-even point for AFA generation (17 patients per shift).

Process for joining KWEMA

  1. Candidate meets eligibility criteria as outlined above. If the candidate fails to meet the prerequisites, application cannot proceed.
  2. Candidate approaches KWEMA President to begin membership application.
  3. Charge nurse feedback and executive/chief feedback is collected anonymously.
  4. Feedback is shared with the candidate.
  5. Candidate gives permission to proceed with the following process in order to be considered to join KWEMA (if not, proceed to 6):
    1. Feedback from charge nurses will be shared with the full KWEMA membership.
    2. The candidate will be discussed by the KWEMA membership, and any concerns raised by members will be brought to the candidate's attention.
    3. This will then be sent to motion with a 1-week discussion period before opening a formal vote, as per usual KWEMA voting procedure.
  6. If the candidate elects to defer their application for membership before group discussion (i.e. at point 4), charge nurse and exec/chief feedback remains private.
  7. If the candidate wants to be considered for KWEMA membership at a later date after withdrawing their application, the waiting period will be not less than 3 months or 30 shifts from the time the application is withdrawn, whichever is longer.
  8. After a failing vote, the candidate is eligible to re-apply to join KWEMA after 6 months or 60 shifts from the date the vote closes, whichever is longer.
  9. Re-application process begins starting at point 2.
  10. At the time when a candidate's application for membership proceeds to a vote, a summary of previous requests and/or withdrawals will be included.
  11. If a candidate is voted into KWEMA based on a majority vote, they must review and agree to the KWEMA governance and the KWEMA code of conduct. If this step is not completed, the passing membership vote will be considered nullified.
