ED Update β€” August 2026

August 2026 Β· Bill

Glidescope at Midtown

FYI β€” our Glidescope is broken at Midtown and we are borrowing an ICU unit for the next 6 weeks.

In the meantime, the borrowed unit requires staff to use the single-use disposable S1, 2, 3, 4 blades. We have put this in the Midtown ED Trauma room with stock of the single-use blades on it. The RRTs have extra stock in ICU to replace what is used for both the adult and pediatric blades when needed.

IO Insertion

FYI, some RNs in critical care and ER RNs (mainly as part of the CCRT team) will be certified to place IO lines starting Aug 15th at Midtown. This policy is not new and has been in place at the Queen's site for a while now.

Also β€” if you're inserting an IO as part of the Massive Transfusion Protocol, the proximal humerus is the preferred site as it can support high volumes of fluids.

Hospital QI Project (CPSO Requirement)

The hospital is launching a group QI project to satisfy the CPSO requirements to maintain your license. Watch for the email from the senior team as they require you to opt in to join.

If you recall, SMGH did this a few years ago and many of our group took advantage to get their QI project done relatively easily. Look out for an email from the SLT.

Process Mapping

Midtown is doing some process mapping of the ER on Aug 20th in room K202. There is free food if anyone is available between 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Please email [email protected] if you are able to attend, by Aug 15th.
